The Garden Centre was started by Tony & Sue Doubleday in 1986, who initially began with the production of a small number of bedding plants grown in a few greenhouses.
The sales of these plants were made in the barn close to the greenhouses, hence the name The Barn. Tony and Sue expanded into patio plants, as well as bedding plants and then saw a gap in the market for providing outstanding hanging baskets – which they became, and are still renowned for, with customers even travelling annually from Scotland to get their baskets!!
In 2002 a cafe was built at the request of the increasing number of loyal customers. From serving just tea and cakes this has now grown into a full scale cafe.
In 2013, after running his own artisan garden centre in Sandon, Chelmsford, Richard and his partner Rachel returned to ‘evolve’ the business into a garden centre that stands out from the rest. From the beginning, the emphasis at The Barn has been on the plants and Richard and Rachel pride themselves on still growing plants on site and they ensure that they are the first thing you see when entering the garden centre.
Everything is chosen with care from the wide range of carefully curated plants to handpicked, stylish gardenalia and giftware. Whilst The Barn has expanded over time, with it’s revamp in 2016, the emphasis has been on maintaining a friendly, family orientated garden centre, where service is of paramount importance…. some members of staff have been at The Barn for over 25 years!
