We are seeking a hardworking and dependable person to join our team as a Grounds and Maintenance Assistant (and delivery driver) – helping keep The Barn clean, safe, and beautiful!

Location: The Barn, Stanway, Essex
Hours: Part-Time / Zero-Hours / Flexible
Reports to: Owners/Garden & Plant Manager
About the role:
This is a flexible, ad hoc role – hours will vary based on the needs of The Barn. You’ll be called in as needed to help with general maintenance, deliveries, and garden tasks. This position is ideal if you enjoy hands-on work, being outdoors, and want a role that can fit around your lifestyle.
The role is very active, so a good level of physical fitness is essential, along with the ability to perform manual tasks, including lifting heavy objects. A full UK Driver’s Licence is required, as the role includes some local deliveries of plants and gardening products.
Knowledge of Health & Safety regulations is advantageous, but training will be provided
Responsibilities:
- General Maintenance – Perform regular maintenance of garden centre facilities, ensuring our Garden Centre is clean, safe, and operating efficiently for both customers and our team. Repairing or replacing damaged structures, fixtures, or equipment as needed.
- Delivery Driving – The role will include some delivery work of plants and gardening products to local customers homes.
- Health and Safety Compliance – Ensuring all areas are safe and free from hazards. Monitoring and addressing potential safety concerns, such as slippery surfaces or broken equipment.
- Plants & Groundskeeping – Replenishing plant displays, watering, pruning. Remove debris, fallen leaves from outdoor areas. Conducting basic maintenance on gardening equipment such as trimmers, and irrigation systems.
- Customer Service (as needed) – Providing excellent service and friendly advice to our customers. Assisting customers with loading heavy items into their vehicles.
- Garden Team Support (as needed) – Support Garden Team in busy periods with plant deliveries, stock and watering.
Skills you will bring:
- Valid UK Driver’s Licence
- Ability to lift and carry heavy plants and equipment
- Reliable, proactive, and hardworking
- Great communication and time management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Friendly, professional attitude
Please note – This is a Part Time Position/Flexible Position – some weekend work may be required.
